Denise Richards and Charlie Sheen have been locked in multiple battles involving their own daughters, including a lawsuit she filed in 2016 for child abuse.
Denise Richards revealed why she dumped Charlie Sheen when she was six months pregnant with her youngest daughter Lola hers.
The 51-year-old actress filed for divorce from her in 2005 and during her explosive separation accused Charlie of threatening to kill her, pushing her and endangering her daughters because of her fondness for prostitutes and pornography.
In a new episode of the podcast, 'Dear Media Divorced Not Dead,' Denise said: "You guys know what happened. And at the time I was wondering if I would want my daughters to be married to a man like him. No offense, but it's certain".
And she added: "Now I think he would understand what I'm saying. That's when I questioned why he was accepting all that for me and them."
Charlie and Denise married in 2002 and welcomed two daughters almost immediately: Sami, 18, and Lola, 17.
The actress told podcast host Caroline Stanbury that the failure of their relationship was due to "a lot of things, but I don't regret my marriage to Charlie, obviously, not at all, because I really believe that he and I came together to have our daughters. I feel like it wasn't a good marriage, obviously, not a good relationship. There's a lot the public doesn't know. You never really know what goes on behind closed doors."
Despite the financial implications of the divorce: "I would have preferred to live in a tent than in the houses we had at the time. I didn't care. It would have been in my car. It was very toxic, so what really mattered was the welfare of my daughters".
Yet for years, the actress wrestled with how guilty she felt about breaking up the "family unit," especially since her parents were married until her mother died.
Denise and Charlie's divorce was finalized in November 2006 with a court order that, except during supervised visitation, Charlie stay 300 feet from Denise and her daughters, Access Hollywood reported.
Charlie, who was reportedly once thrown out of the Plaza Hotel by the police after vandalizing his room while using illicit substances, is now HIV-positive.
He and his next wife, Brooke Mueller, both with widely discussed substance use issues, welcomed twin sons named Max and Bob, aged 13.
In 2013 it was Denise who stepped in and took temporary care of the children after the government took them away from their mother because of her drug problem.
During her new appearance on the podcast, Denise told Caroline that she took care of the twins because she "is a family girl and just wanted to keep the peace with the kids."
