This was a difficult time for Sheeran as it came shortly after his wife Cherry Seaborn was diagnosed with a tumour. Doctors had informed him that his pregnant wife needed surgery that couldn't take place until after she had given birth to their second child, leaving Sheeran feeling powerless.
Although Seaborn carried their daughter, Jupiter, to term and had a successful surgery in June, Sheeran was devastated by the news of Edwards' death. The night before he learned of the tragic news, he was out for dinner with pop star Taylor Swift and her boyfriend, actor Joe Alwyn, and was exchanging texts with Edwards about plans to shoot a video the next day. Sheeran said that 12 hours later, Edwards was dead, leaving him feeling helpless and confused.
Following this, Sheeran began seeing a therapist to help him cope with his overwhelming feelings. He explained to Rolling Stone magazine that he had always experienced real lows in his life but had never really addressed them until last year.
As a father, he felt embarrassed by his seemingly selfish thoughts and was grateful to Seaborn for encouraging him to seek professional help. Sheeran hopes that by sharing his story, he can encourage others to seek help when they're struggling with their mental health.
