Kidman revealed that the experience of filming such scenes left her feeling deeply humiliated and ashamed. She often paralleled her character's own feelings about the situation and would go home feeling the same emotions. However, Kidman was willing to do whatever it took for the role because she felt it was important for the character and the story.
Kidman went on to describe a particularly difficult scene where she was lying on the floor in the bathroom, broken and crying, and just couldn't get up in-between takes. She felt very exposed and vulnerable, but also had flashes of images of women who have gone through similar experiences, which helped her channel the emotions needed for the role.
Despite the challenging nature of the role, Kidman received wonderful feedback from viewers who said they now understand why someone would stay with an abusive partner. However, there was some criticism from male critics who were dismissive of the female-led ensemble.
The series was a critical success and HBO has already approached author Liane Moriarty for ideas for a potential second season, though no official announcement has been made.
