Prince Harry's Court Cases Against Media: A Breakdown

Prince Harry's Court Cases Against Media: A Breakdown

The Duke of Sussex has recently been in the UK for a court hearing against a newspaper. Prince Harry's relationship with the media has been tumultuous, and he holds the press responsible for the tragic death of his mother, Princess Diana, who passed away in a car crash in Paris in 1997 while trying to escape from paparazzi.

Both Prince Harry and his wife Meghan have expressed concerns about their safety due to the actions of photographers. They recently experienced a situation in New York where they were chased by photographers, which put their lives at risk. This incident occurred after Meghan Markle received the Women of Vision Award.

Prince Harry has made it his life's mission to reform the British media and has engaged in several battles with British tabloids regarding privacy issues.

The ongoing court cases involving the Duke can be summarized as follows:

Mirror Group Newspapers:

Prince Harry is one of several celebrities seeking damages from Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN) over unlawful information-gathering practices, such as phone hacking, carried out by the company's titles. His case is one of four representative cases selected for a trial that will determine the level of damages if the claimants' claims are successful. MGN, which publishes The Mirror, The Sunday Mirror, and The Sunday People, has acknowledged "some evidence" of unlawful information gathering, including for a story involving Prince Harry. However, they have denied all allegations of voicemail interception and argued that some claims have been brought too late.

Associated Newspapers:

Prince Harry, along with pop star Elton John and other claimants, is taking legal action against the publisher of the Daily Mail and The Mail on Sunday tabloids, Associated Newspapers (ANL), for alleged breaches of privacy. The claimants accuse ANL of using methods like hiring private investigators, phone tapping, and impersonating individuals to obtain medical information for articles. The alleged unlawful acts took place from 1993 to 2011, with some occurring as recently as 2018. ANL has dismissed these allegations and argued against the case going to trial. A ruling on this matter is expected at a later date.

ANL Libel Claim:

In another lawsuit involving the Daily Mail publisher, Prince Harry has brought a libel claim over an article related to his separate legal battle with the British government regarding security arrangements while in the UK. The article, published by The Mail on Sunday newspaper in February 2022, suggested that Prince Harry tried to keep the legal challenge a secret.

ANL argues that the article did not cause significant damage to Prince Harry's reputation and expressed an "honest opinion." Prince Harry's legal team has requested the court to dismiss ANL's defense or deliver a judgment in his favor without going to trial. A judgment on this matter is also expected at a later date.

News Group Newspapers:

Prince Harry is suing News Group Newspapers (NGN), which is part of Rupert Murdoch's global media empire, for unlawful information-gathering practices. NGN, the publisher of tabloids The Sun and the now-defunct News of the World, is seeking to have the claims dismissed without trial, arguing that they were filed too late.

However, in court documents, Prince Harry claims that the delay in filing a lawsuit against NGN resulted from a "secret agreement" between the royal family and the publisher. NGN denies the existence of such an agreement. A similar claim against NGN was made by British actor Hugh Grant, and the High Court recently ruled to allow the case to proceed to trial.
