Throughout the proceedings, Prince Harry passionately argued that the media's invasive tactics had caused him significant distress and had taken a toll on his closest relationships.
In his lawsuit against the Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN), a major British newspaper group, Prince Harry accused them of phone hacking and other illicit methods to obtain information about his life from 1996 to 2009. MGN's lawyer, Andrew Green, subjected the duke to meticulous questioning, delving into various aspects of his youth and personal experiences. Prince Harry, at one juncture, asserted that certain editors and journalists bore responsibility for the distress inflicted upon him, even going as far as indirectly referencing the tragic death of his mother, Princess Diana.
The courtroom session on Tuesday touched upon numerous anecdotes from Prince Harry's past. It covered topics such as his diagnosis with mononucleosis (commonly known as the "kissing disease"), his teenage outings to pubs, his thumb injury and a back injury sustained while playing polo, his leisurely afternoons during his gap year spent on the beach, and even Princess Diana's trips to pick him up from school. All of these stories were presented as evidence.
Prince Harry alleged that approximately 140 articles published by Mirror Group contained information obtained through unlawful means. Out of those articles, 33 have been selected for consideration in the trial. The duke asserted that every single article had caused him distress and played a destructive role during his formative years.
In a written statement submitted to the court, Prince Harry expressed concerns about the potential interception of his conversations with family and friends. He highlighted that he and his brother, Prince William, had shared personal aspects of their lives, trusting each other with private information. The duke also mentioned discussing private and sensitive matters on voicemails left on the phone of the then Kate Middleton.
Prince Harry further contended that the press actively sought to ruin his relationships, stating that tabloids seemed to prefer him to be single as it made for more enticing news. He criticized the current Conservative government and, in a written statement, strongly condemned Piers Morgan and his journalists for intruding into his late mother's private and sensitive messages, expressing that the thought of it made him physically sick.
