During her speech, Meghan expressed her passion for empowering women and highlighted the importance of supporting them. However, Harry reminded her that they still had a wedding to plan. The event took place amidst campaigns like #MeToo and Time's Up, and Meghan emphasized the need to spotlight women's empowerment and encourage others to listen.
Despite Meghan's powerful words, the royal biographer notes that as patrons of the foundation, the couple had little direct influence on its work—an aspect that the Duchess needed to learn. The executives of the establishment were the ones wielding the power, often criticized for manipulating the Royals like chess pieces.
While William, Kate, and Harry had grown accustomed to their varying behaviors, Meghan's arrival as a natural advocate for the foundation's charitable work disrupted the executives' established rhythm.
Bauer further argues that Meghan's words disregarded the Royal Family's customs and rules of integrity, suggesting that she hadn't been invited to join the Royal Foundation to reinvent them.
In response, Harry interjected loudly, whispering "the wedding first," presumably after noticing a smirk on his older brother William's face. However, Meghan responded to the unexpected interruption, saying, "We can multitask."
Later in the event, the Royals admitted that they still faced challenges and had differences, less than two years before the Sussexes stepped down as working members of the royal family in 2020.
