Royal commentator Daniela Elser, writing for news.co.au, observed Meghan's attire as she traveled to reunite with the Duke of Sussex. Elser pointed out the presence of expensive pieces, which she interpreted as an attention-grabbing move.
"While the duchess had departed Los Angeles adorned in over $10,000 worth of designer items, including an Hermès scarf and now sold-out Valentino flats, for her first Invictus event, she opted for a $217 Banana Republic shirt dress."
Despite her choice of a more budget-friendly dress for the occasion, the Duchess of Sussex did not go unnoticed, as she sported a pinky ring estimated to be valued at nearly $100,000.
According to Elser, the decision to wear such an extravagant piece at a charitable event gave the impression of arrogance and raised eyebrows.
"This situation immediately brought to mind the Sussexes' highly successful Southern Africa tour in 2019 when the former actress deliberately wore affordable pieces, avoiding designer labels to keep the focus on their charitable work," Elser noted.
"However, this time around, as Meghan stood beside Harry in Dusseldorf, she also sported a diamond pinky ring with an undisclosed origin, reportedly valued at $96,000. (In 2021, the couple denied that the ring was made from a stone given to them as part of a gift of diamonds from someone in the Middle East.)
"Regardless of where the ring came from, whether it was a gift or a purchase, the question arises: why display it now? There's a discordant element in witnessing such extravagance, a symbol of the Sussexes' extreme privilege, in the midst of a massive charitable effort," she concluded.
