Justin Hunter, the maker of renowned Fijian pearls and owner of J Hunter Pearls, confirmed the necklace's name and expressed honor in contributing to Meghan's historical visit. He emphasized the special story attached to these pearls, highlighting their origin and the people involved in their production, symbolizing communal unity and stewardship of the sea.
The J Hunter pearls are famous for their rare colors, attributed to the waters around Savusavu, where they are primarily farmed. South Sea saltwater pearls, measuring at least 12 millimeters and possibly up to 15 millimeters, adorn this 18-inch necklace, showcasing versatile gold, silver, and black pearls.
However, photos capturing Meghan's reaction to the pearl gift depicted an awkward atmosphere. Initially, Meghan appeared excited, but her anticipation quickly turned into a frown, leading to a frozen smile. She subsequently posed for a photo with a forced grin and a seemingly disgusted expression.
According to several Royal staff members accompanying Meghan on her trip, she was visibly disappointed with the necklace, seemingly unaware of its significant value. Meghan had expected diamonds to match her perceived class, as she has a preference for the sparkle and flash of diamonds. During a Fiji market tour, Meghan reportedly turned and expressed her displeasure to a staff member, leading to the employee's tears. The planned 20-minute tour to meet female stallholders involved in the UN Women's project "Markets for Change" was abruptly shortened, with Meghan spending only six minutes in the market before being hastily moved along.
Reports suggest that Meghan became upset when a Fijian lady touched her pregnant belly, which prompted her to become visibly angry and request her female bodyguard to remove her from the crowded market immediately. This incident added to the negative perception some had of Meghan during her visit.
