In an interview with the BBC, the Spotify boss stated, "We thought new innovation was needed to happen here. We thought that we could come in and offer a great experience that both makes consumers happy and allows new creators new avenues." He acknowledged that while some aspects of the venture were successful, others were not, and the company was learning from these experiences. He expressed best wishes for those they did not renew contracts with going forward.
The Sussexes were officially removed from the Spotify deal in June, following the collapse of the deal after just one series. Following the fallout, Meghan and Harry attempted to secure exclusive copyright ownership of the name "Archewell Audio." However, their requests were denied by the US Patent and Trademark Office due to the potential for confusion with an existing brand.
Spotify's legal team is evidently displeased with the Sussexes, as they received a substantial sum without delivering a commensurate product. This situation led to Spotify facing questions from investors and even required one of its executives to explain the matter in the British Parliament. The decision to offer such a substantial deal to the couple sparked controversy in the music industry.
The Spotify and Netflix deal with Meghan and Harry faced challenges from the outset and led to a year-long legal battle as Spotify sought to reclaim their advance payment. Currently, Meghan and Harry seem hesitant to engage in further legal proceedings with Spotify.
To recoup their investment in Montecito's home studio, Spotify has resorted to various measures, including the removal of expensive video recording equipment from the couple's mansion. If a mutually agreeable conclusion to the contract is not reached, it appears increasingly likely that Meghan and Harry may have to pursue legal action.
Additionally, Spotify has launched public criticisms of the Sussexes. Simmons, the Head of Podcast Innovation and Monetization at Spotify, voiced his disapproval of the couple in an episode of his podcast, "The Grift," suggesting that the initial podcast should have followed a different path.
