Jim Gaffigan Roasts Meghan Markle Live at Golden Globes Awards: A Controversial Welcome

At the 2024 Golden Globe Awards, comedian Jim Gaffigan stirred up controversy with a series of jokes targeting Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, who has been at the center of various controversies since her candid interview with Oprah Winfrey last year. Presenting the award for the best performance in stand-up comedy on television, Gaffigan didn't hold back as he took jabs at Meghan's claims of racism within the royal family and her legal battles. "I can't believe I'm in the entertainment industry. I'm from a small town in Indiana. I'm not a pedophile," Gaffigan quipped, adding, "But enough about me, let's talk about the nominees—they are talented and funny, unlike some people who think they are funny but are really just whiny and entitled. You know who I'm talking about—Meghan Markle."

The audience gasped and groaned as Gaffigan continued his roast, asserting that Meghan was not welcome among them and questioning her national identity. He went on to reference the Oprah interview, mocking Meghan's description of concerns about Archie's skin tone. "She said there were conversations about how dark her baby's skin would be. Well, maybe they were just curious, maybe they wanted to know if he would need sunscreen, or maybe they were worried he would look like his grandfather Prince Charles. He's pretty dark, have you seen him? He's like burnt toast."

Gaffigan didn't spare Meghan's legal victory against the Mail on Sunday either, suggesting that the concept of sending handwritten letters was outdated. He accused Meghan of hypocrisy, pointing out that she claimed to desire privacy but shared her personal life on television.

"She said she wanted to be left alone, but then she went on TV and told the whole world her sob story. She said she was suicidal, but then she moved to Hollywood and signed a deal with Netflix."

Gaffigan concluded his monologue expressing a desire for Meghan not to win any awards and suggesting deportation. The comedian's remarks garnered a mixed reaction, with some finding them hilarious and applauding his boldness, while others deemed them offensive and inappropriate. Social media became a battleground for opinions, sparking a heated debate about Meghan Markle and Jim Gaffigan.
