WME Terminates Meghan Markle Contract Amidst Controversy: Martha Stewart Files Lawsuit Alleging Theft of Reality TV Show Name

According to a trademark application obtained by DailyMail.com, Meghan Markle's new venture, American Riviera Orchard, is set to offer a range of edible oils and fats, as well as jellies, jams, and spreads made from legumes, garlic, sesame, nuts, and fruits. The application also indicates that Meghan intends to release recipe books, allowing others to indulge in a modern-day royal dining experience. This trademark filing, accompanied by a flashy announcement, signals a significant relaunch for Meghan, with American Riviera Orchard serving as the new incarnation of her previous lifestyle website, The Tig, which she operated during her acting career on the TV show Suits.

As of now, details about the brand are scarce, with only a series of nine enigmatic Instagram posts revealing the brand's logo alongside the name American Riviera Orchard. Comments have been disabled on these posts, and the account directs users to a new website bearing the same name, where visitors can join a mailing list by providing their email addresses. However, the US trademark application sheds more light on Meghan's plans. The application mentions downloadable and printed cookbooks, as well as various dining-related items such as coffee services, tableware, serving ware, decanters, dinnerware, napkin rings, table place card holders, and beverage ware.

Additionally, the brand will offer tablecloths, place mats, napkins, kitchen linens, fabric gift wraps, jellies, jams, marmalades, fruit preserves, edible oils and fats, vegetable-based spreads, legume-based spreads, nut-based spreads, garlic-based spreads, sesame-based spreads, dairy-based spreads, nut butters, and fruit butters.

Interestingly, in the owner section of the trademark application, Meghan named her company "Knows Best LLC." However, it has come to light that she used a name similar to an American reality TV show hosted by Martha Stewart called "Martha Knows Best." The show focused on gardening and home projects with celebrity guests. Meghan's choice to adopt a similar name has raised concerns of potential copyright infringement. While imitation may be seen as flattering, crossing the line into infringement is an entirely different matter. Even Martha Stewart herself might question Meghan's blatant attempt to mimic her image. After all, reinvention should stem from within, rather than by appropriating someone else's playbook. Meghan is not Martha Stewart—there is only one Martha, who has mastered her craft over a long and successful career. It will likely be amusing if Meghan's trademark application is denied, considering the presence of many businesses in the area with similar names and the fact that Meghan does not even own an orchard.
