Jimmy Carr’s joke comparing Prince Harry to Kanye West has stirred a mix of laughs, shock, and criticism.
During a stand-up show, Carr responded to an audience question about whether he preferred Prince William or Prince Harry. His answer left no doubt where he stood — he compared the royal family to the Kardashians, calling Prince Harry “our Kanye.” He then referenced the infamous 2005 incident when a young Prince Harry wore a Nazi uniform to a costume party, saying Harry “occasionally dresses as a Nazi — and he f***ed up.”
The comparison also drew on Kanye West’s controversies over antisemitic remarks, which the rapper later claimed to renounce. While Harry apologised for his mistake years ago, it remains a stain on his public image, especially in the UK.
Carr posted the joke on his Instagram for his 2.5 million followers, where reactions were split. Some called it clever; others felt it was unfair to keep bringing up Harry’s past. Comments ranged from “Harry just can’t catch a break” to “Harry is a treasure.”
This isn’t Carr’s first brush with controversy — he’s known for pushing boundaries in comedy and has also been criticised for past offensive jokes and a tax avoidance scandal. Despite this, his business remains highly profitable, earning over $6 million last year.
The timing of the joke comes as Harry’s public standing remains low. A recent YouGov poll shows Prince William with a 74% approval rating and Princess Kate at 71%, while Harry sits at 28% and Meghan Markle at 20% — numbers only slightly higher than Prince Andrew’s. Negative views of Harry and Meghan are also high, with over 60% of Brits disapproving of both.
