The letter was delivered through the local U.S. consulate and handed to Thomas Markle in the presence of a lawyer, a move said to be aimed at maintaining privacy and avoiding any potential misunderstandings.
Despite these precautions, Meghan has reportedly been warned that once a letter reaches its recipient, the sender has little control over what happens next — including whether its contents remain private.
Attorney Dean Strang addressed the situation on his podcast I Rest My Case, explaining, “You sent it to him — what he does with it, you can’t expect to control.” He added that no matter how carefully a message is delivered, the power shifts the moment it is received.
“However tightly managed the delivery of a private message may be, the moment it reaches the recipient, the sender effectively gives up any real control over what happens next,” Strang said. “In relationships already marked by tension or mistrust, the risk of private communications becoming public is always present and difficult to prevent.”
A source speaking to Radar Online emphasized that Meghan’s decision to write the letter was not driven by strategy or image management. “This wasn’t a calculated move meant to shape public opinion or protect a legal position,” the insider said.
Instead, the source described it as a deeply personal reaction to a serious health crisis. “It was a human response to a medical emergency,” they explained. “At the same time, there was an understanding that given the history, putting anything in writing came with the risk that it could one day be exposed.”
