Reports suggest Meghan Markle held strong expectations about her future royal status, even though she married the “spare” rather than the heir.

According to British author and former BBC journalist Tom Bower, Meghan allegedly believed she would one day become Queen — a role traditionally destined for Kate Middleton as the wife of Prince William, the next in line to the throne.

Bower shared these claims during an appearance on the Kinsey Schofield Unfiltered podcast, promoting his upcoming book Betrayal: Power, Deceit and the Fight for the Future of the Royal Family.

During the discussion, he recounted an insider’s account, saying an establishment source once told the late Queen that Meghan “thought that once she married into the royal family, she was going to be a god.” Bower added that, while the idea sounds outrageous, he believes Meghan genuinely felt that way.

He went on to say that his conversations with royal insiders led him to conclude that Meghan “truly believed she, not Kate Middleton, should be the next queen after King Charles.”

Bower claimed Meghan could not understand why Kate would take precedence over her, as she reportedly saw herself as “better looking, more intelligent, and harder working.” He added that Meghan strongly disliked the couple’s lower ranking within the royal hierarchy.

“She achieved everything she initially wanted, but quickly realized there was much more she couldn’t obtain,” Bower said, arguing this was a key factor in her decision not to remain in the royal family.
