Inside Meghan Markle’s Sydney Retreat: How Being a Journalist Changed Everything

I Paid $2,699 to See Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, at Her Sydney Retreat — Until They Discovered I’m a Journalist

I had prepared myself for the full experience — the gala dinners, the ocean-view yoga sessions, the sound healing, the cocktails — all for the chance to see Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, speak in person. What I wasn’t prepared for was being abruptly removed from the guest list the moment organizers realized what I do for a living.

A Pricey Ticket Into Meghan’s New Wellness World

Paying $2,699 to share a hotel room with a total stranger just for a glimpse of Meghan sounded a little irrational, even to me. But that’s the pull of modern women’s wellness culture.

Dress something up with empowerment messaging, throw in coastal views, champagne, “find your purpose” workshops, and the allure of being near someone royal-adjacent — suddenly even the most questionable financial decision feels like “self-growth.”

At least, that’s how I rationalized it.

When the Invitation Came, It Felt Exclusive — and Intentional

The Her Best Life retreat — held April 17–19 in Sydney’s Coogee — promised a boutique experience. The marketing was crystal clear: only 300 women, luxury accommodations, glamorous dinners, yoga, cocktails, downtime by the pool, and the main attraction… Meghan Markle in a live, intimate conversation.

So when I filled out the registration form and received a soft-spoken email saying spots were limited and they’d “be in touch soon if we have a spot with your name on it,” I thought I was being vetted. It felt curated. Exclusive. Like being chosen.

Then came the message that pushed me over the line:

You’re invited.

A Her Best Life staff member told me that Gemma O’Neill “would absolutely love” for me to attend and that a place had already been saved just for me. All I needed to do was confirm and pay through a private link.

I’ll be honest — I was wary.

The tone of the email was unusually warm and personal, almost as if I were being welcomed into something intimate, not a high-priced retreat.

But curiosity won. I paid.

And Then Everything Changed

After my payment went through, I was welcomed to the retreat… briefly.

The moment organizers discovered I’m a journalist — a detail I hadn’t hidden — they instantly refunded my money and revoked my spot.

No conversation.

No clarification.

Just an abrupt reversal.

The invitation evaporated as quickly as it had appeared.
