King Charles Aide Forces Media Back After Mamdani Mentions Koh-i-Noor Controversy

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani met with King Charles III on Wednesday, shortly after publicly stating that he would urge the British monarch to return the famous Koh-i-Noor Diamond.

The meeting reportedly became tense when King Charles’s press secretary moved members of the media away as the mayor and the king spoke. The encounter took place during a wreath-laying ceremony at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, where both leaders were present to pay tribute.

Earlier in the day, Mamdani had spoken openly about the long-disputed diamond during a press conference in the Bronx. When asked what he would say if given the chance to speak directly with the king, he responded that he would encourage Charles to return the Koh-i-Noor Diamond, a precious jewel that has remained part of the British Crown Jewels for generations.

The Koh-i-Noor has long been at the center of international debate, with countries including India, Pakistan, Iran, and Afghanistan all laying historical claim to it. Valued at up to $1 billion, the diamond carries not only immense monetary worth but also deep historical and cultural significance.

It remains unclear whether Mayor Mamdani actually raised the issue during his brief conversation with King Charles. However, the mayor’s public comments have once again brought global attention to the long-running controversy surrounding the ownership of one of Britain’s most iconic royal jewels.
