Since leaving official royal responsibilities, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have lived a financially independent life in California with their children. However, ongoing tensions between them and the wider Royal Family have continued to attract public attention.
Behind the scenes, the monarchy has long experienced internal disagreements, including the well-documented strain between Prince William and Prince Harry, as well as reported difficulties between Princess Catherine and Meghan Markle.
Once very close, the two brothers shared a strong bond, especially after the death of Princess Diana. At one point, Prince William acknowledged that their shared experiences had brought them closer. Catherine also once commented on their strong connection during a public conversation, although that closeness has since changed significantly.
In a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Prince Harry spoke openly about the growing distance between him and his brother, describing their relationship as being “on different paths” and acknowledging there was currently “space” between them. Despite this, he also expressed affection for William, calling him his brother and saying they had endured difficult experiences together.
During the same interview, Harry also made comments suggesting that both his father and brother were constrained by the structure of the monarchy, remarks that reportedly caused further tension within the Royal Family. Royal commentators noted that Prince William was deeply affected by the claims, with some reports suggesting he felt betrayed by his brother’s public statements.
In response to the interview, Prince William later stated that the Royal Family was “not a racist family” and confirmed he had not yet spoken to Harry but intended to do so.
Harry’s 2023 memoir Spare further intensified public interest in the family rift, as he described his brother in strongly critical terms and recounted a private disagreement that allegedly became physical. He also claimed that William had made unflattering remarks about Meghan during a heated exchange.
More recently, however, reports suggest that Harry and Meghan may be reconsidering their public approach toward the Royal Family. According to royal insiders, there are indications that the couple may be attempting to ease tensions and move away from further public criticism.
Some sources claim that their previous efforts have not significantly changed perceptions within the monarchy, and that continuing confrontation offers little benefit. As a result, speculation has grown that the Sussexes may now be focusing more on stability and private family life rather than public disputes.
