"It was just a summer romance": A close friend of Diana's tells the truth about her story with Dodi
Derek Deane reveals the details of his last conversation with Lady Di
"It was a summer romance, I am clear that she knew she would never marry him, but still, they had a great time and she felt safe by his side." These are the words of Derek Dean, who was one of the confidants of Diana of Wales, who finally, more than twenty years after the death of the Princess, has spoken about the last summer of the mother of the queen's grandchildren Isabel.
An intense summer that ended the life of Lady Di on the night of August 31, 1997 at the Bridge of the Soul of what is precisely known as the City of Love. Paradoxes of destiny, love is what she most lacked in her life the mother of princes Harry and William. Although for many Dodi Al Fayed was Diana's lifesaver in one of her most convulsive moments, the truth is that it was her 'hobby' after the breakup of cardiologist Hasnat Khan, with whom she had a clandestine romance that when it came to light it concentrated such media attention that the Hindu could not bear.
Although for Diana the breakup was a severe blow, the Princess looked to the future with hope. This has been confirmed by Deane, who at that time was the director of the British National Ballet. Lady Di always had a great passion for dance, in fact there was a time when she considered being a dancer but it was too tall and it developed very early. However, when she became a princess, she began to encourage activities related to ballet and developed a special friendship with Deane. So much so that she even called her before going to France with Dodi and revealed some of her plans. "She felt happy, liberated from her marriage to Carlos and looked to the future with hope."
However, the happiness did not last long. Just a month and a half after starting her romance with the Egyptian, her life was cut short in a fatal accident. "I could never see her again," laments Deane, who had plans to meet her around the summer. In spite of everything, the Briton is convinced that together with Dodi, Diana felt protected, although he doubts that she saw it as more than a passing story.
A PRECIPITATED RELATIONSHIP
According to Deane's surprising statements, everything seems to indicate that the story between Lady Di and the son of the former owner of Harrod's stores was more the result of passion than of true love, at least for the Princess, who had just finished a relationship with cardiologist Hasnat Khan.
The couple had met on several occasions in numerous London high society events such as polo tournaments, premieres or charity events but it was not until July 1997 that a relationship of a sentimental nature began. It was thanks to Dodi's father, Mohamed Al Fayed, a personal friend of Count Spencer, who invited Diana to spend a few days off in St. Tropez with his sons Princes William and Harry, which made it possible for Lady Di and the heir strengthened ties. The lies say that Dodi had been secretly in love with Diana for a long time and that he even broke his engagement with a young model just to be able to spend a few days with the Princess and try to win her over. Something that he finally got. What we will never know is if she really took it as a passing romance or saw in Dodi the man to share something with more than a luxurious cruise on the Mediterranean.
