It was in 1934 that Prince Philip met his future wife for the very first time, at the wedding of Princess Marine of Greece and Denmark and Prince George, Duke of Kent. He was only 13 years old and she was eight. We must believe that despite their young age, love at first sight had already operated between the first cousins. It was only 5 years later that they found themselves at Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, England. During the Second World War, the lovers maintain a passionate epistolary relationship, which led the Duke of Edinburgh to request the hand of his sweetheart in 1946, from her father, King George. If the latter was not at first the most favorable because of the young age of his daughter, he finally gave his approval. So, on July 10, 1947, a few months after Elizabeth II had blown out her 21 candles, her engagement to Prince Philip was officially announced.
A grandiose wedding
The couple married a few months later in early winter on November 20, 1947 at Westminster Abbey. A grandiose wedding attended by 200 million people. For his beauty, Prince Philip still had to make some sacrifices, such as renouncing his titles as Prince of Greece and Denmark in order to be naturalized British. On the morning of his wedding, Philip was made Duke of Edinburgh by the King. On February 6, 1952, he officially became Prince Consort upon the accession to the throne of Queen Elizabeth II. More united and in love than ever, Elizabeth II and Philip have formed over the years a duo as united as they are accomplices. A time shaken by rumors of infidelity, they were quickly swept away by the force of their love. From their marriage were born four children: Prince Charles on November 14, 1948, Princess Anne on August 15, 1950, Prince Andrew on February 19, 1960 and Prince Edward on March 10, 1964.
Unfailing loyalty
Throughout his wife's reign, Prince Philip established himself as his staunch confidant. A trusted, loyal partner she could count on in all situations. Known for his outspokenness, he sometimes helped his wife to get out of several bad times: "He is my rock. He has simply been my strength and my support." Philip knew how to comply with the protocols out of love for Elizabeth, as he explains in an interview: "My first, second and last job is to never let the queen down."
