Queen Elizabeth II celebrates her 95th birthday discreetly
The monarch's birthday coincides with the two weeks of mourning for the recent death of her husband, Prince Philip.
Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her 95th birthday discreetly at Windsor Castle on Wednesday, just days after the funeral of her husband, Prince Philip.
Some members of the royal family were expected to spend the day with the monarch. Her birthday coincides with the royal family's two weeks of mourning for Felipe, which ends on Friday.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was one of many who sent her good wishes to the queen.
"I have always had the greatest admiration for her Majesty and her service to the country and the Commonwealth," Johnson tweeted. "I am proud to serve as her prime minister."
Philip, who held the title of Duke of Edinburgh, died on April 9 at the age of 99. Family and friends gathered for his funeral Saturday at St George's Chapel in Windsor for his funeral.
His death came a few months before his 100th birthday, which was to be the center of the royal celebrations this year. The queen's 95th birthday had been planned as a more low-key event.
