But why is Trump's hair like this?

Even if it were a carry-over, it would be a very bizarre carry-over, but it probably isn't: the opinion of a hairdresser

The hairdo is one of the first things that leap to the eye when looking at Donald Trump, the millionaire US businessman who has been leading the Republican Party primaries for months, and it has inevitably become an element of the debate. Is it a toupee? Of a carryover? Is their strange shape natural or the result of an external intervention? Some time ago Caroline Mitgang, a cosmetics expert and hairdresser, tried to explain about Quartz what exactly is behind Donald Trump's hair.

For a start, Trump certainly doesn't wear a toupee. He himself pulled his hair several times to dismiss these accusations. And, to be on the safe side, he also let third parties pull them. These videos also provide us with the best opportunities to understand what's really going on around his head.

In fact, Trump's hair looks more like a carryover than a toupee. The "fringe" that hides part of his forehead sometimes seems to be made up of hair that starts from the nape of his neck. Mitgang, however, points out that under this alleged carryover there are obviously other hairs: in short, it is not a strategy to hide baldness. Therefore, the term carry-over cannot be applied.

According to some, including one of his unofficial biographers, Trump has undergone some hair transplants over the years: one of these operations would have gone wrong and Trump, in anger, would have hit his then wife Ivana, a circumstance denied by Trump and now also by Ivana, who however initially testified to the contrary. A transplant, however, doesn't help explain Trump's strange hair shape, so we're back in the thick of things.

According to Metgang, the explanation is simple: Trump has one or more "rebel tufts" that grow in a frontal direction. To understand each other, each hair grows from a follicle that is located in the scalp and whose orientation depends on the direction in which the hair grows. A rebellious tuft is a group of hair that grows in a different direction than all that surround it. The only way to control a rebellious tuft is to make it grow, so that its own weight allows it to be bent and directed in the desired direction.

At this point, Mitgang surprisingly sided with Trump's choice: if he cut the rebel tuft without being able to control it, the effects could be even worse, although we cannot be entirely sure since Trump has practically always had this strange cut. . Bottom line: his contention is that Trump keeps his hair long to keep his unruly wisps in check. He does not have a toupee or a carry-over: his most serious fault would only be having chosen a dye of "newborn chick yellow" color. There would be no secrets, therefore, behind the unusual appearance of his head, "but only a haircut that no one likes".
