What Did Taylor Swift Say After Being Interrupted By Kanye West?
What exactly did Taylor Swift say after Kanye West interrupted her VMAs speech all those years ago?
It's hard to believe that it's been more than ten years since Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift at the 2009 VMAs. Although, given his recent history of drama in the spotlight, maybe it's less surprising now than it was then. In fact, after his latest troubles, Kanye sort of fell off the public's radar.
Regardless of how long ago it happened, the Kanye-Taylor moment was a huge one for MTV and for fans. Some argue that it was also huge for Taylor's career, but that's an entirely different discussion.
Something that fans have always wondered is what Taylor said after Kanye rushed the stage. As Vox recapped, Taylor only got out a few lines of her initial acceptance speech for the "Best Female Video" award before the interruption. She started out by saying thank you and then, "I always dreamed about what it would be like to maybe win one of these someday, but I never thought it actually would have happened. I sing country music. So thank you so much for giving me the chance to win a VMA Award! I —"
Kanye said his piece, and directly afterward, the camera cut to Beyoncé for her reaction (which was then memorialized into a GIF) then cut to a prerecorded segment and away from Taylor, who still looked a bit shocked.
But as Harper's Bazaar detailed more recently, that wasn't the end of Taylor's acceptance speech. Producers of the MTV awards show scrambled backstage to figure out a solution to calm their two stars. Not only was Taylor upset and crying, but so was Beyoncé, noted Harper's Bazaar.
So when the then-president of Viacom suggested that Beyoncé might have an opportunity to appear on stage later that night (for an award she wasn't yet supposed to know she'd won) and could hand the mic to Taylor, everyone agreed it was for the best.
Once Bey took the stage to accept her award for "Video of the Year," she brought Taylor back on for another stab at her acceptance speech. As MTV quoted, Taylor's follow-up speech wasn't an epic mic drop, but the star did get her time in the limelight.
Taylor's speech went as such: "I would really like to thank Roman White, who directed the video, and Lucas Till for being in it. I would like to thank all the fans on Twitter and MySpace and everyone that came out to my shows this summer. And I would like to thank my little brother's high school for letting us shoot there."
Of course, critics would argue that the drama with Kanye (and every other drama Taylor's been involved in over the years) only gave her more fodder for her songwriting process. Regardless, both stars have enjoyed plenty of fame since that fateful awards ceremony.
