Meghan, who is 41 years old, is expected to receive her award from Gloria Steinem, an activist and journalist who is also a co-founder of the Ms. Foundation. Meghan and Gloria have been friends for a long time, as evidenced by a conversation they had in 2020.
According to a biography on the Ms. Foundation's website, Meghan is "a feminist, champion of human rights and gender equity, and global role model". It adds that "her lifelong advocacy for women and girls remains a constant thread she weaves through both humanitarian and business ventures".
Meghan is among a group of other accomplished women who are being honoured at the gala. The honourees include LaTosha Brown, Co-founder of Black Voters Matter, Wanda Irving, co-founder of Dr. Shalon's Maternal Action Project, Kimberly Inez McGuire, executive director of Unite for Reproductive & Gender Equity, abortion rights activist Olivia Julianne, and LGBTQ+ advocate Rebekah Bruesehoff.
Teresa C. Younger, Ms. Foundation president and CEO, said in a statement, "Meghan, LaTosha, Wanda, Kimberly, Olivia, and Rebekah are incredible leaders. We are grateful to be able to shine a light on their many accomplishments and tireless work on behalf of gender and racial equity across the country and the world."
Last month, Meghan and Prince Harry revealed in their impact report that through their foundation, they have provided 12.66 million COVID-19 vaccines, helped resettle 174,497 refugees, served 50,000 meals to the hungry, and rescued 7,468 individuals from Afghanistan. The Duke also made a surprise visit to the UK last week to attend a preliminary hearing in his privacy case against the publisher of the Daily Mail.
