The couple delivered only a single podcast series, and both parties have mutually agreed to part ways. Spotify and Archwell Audio announced this on Thursday, without elaborating on the reasons behind the decision to end the collaboration.
The deal concludes in less than a year after Markle's debut podcast, "Archewell Audio," first aired. The podcast segments delved into the challenges faced by women, as described on the platform. Markle's guests included Serena Williams, Mariah Carey, and Mindy Kaling.
At the time, Don Ostroff, Spotify's Chief Content and Advertising Business Officer, praised Prince Harry and Meghan as global citizens who celebrated the goal of uplifting underrepresented voices in their work.
Spotify initially announced an exclusive multi-year partnership with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in December 2020. The partnership focused on producing podcasts and shows that shared uplifting and entertaining stories with Spotify's massive audience. However, a joint statement from Spotify and the couple confirmed their mutual agreement to part ways. Spotify also confirmed that it would not be renewing Markle's podcast, "Archewell Audio," which was part of a contract estimated to be worth $25 million, according to the BBC.
"Archewell Audio," described by Harry as a platform to bring forward different perspectives and voices that may not have been heard before, ran for 12 episodes starting in August 2022. Markle expressed her love for the process, working on the writing and creative aspects late at night in bed. She also mentioned her enjoyment of engaging in meaningful conversations with diverse and inspiring guests, laughing and learning with them. Winning a People's Choice Award last year, Markle described the podcast as a labor of love.
A spokeswoman for Archewell, the company created by Harry and Meghan, was quoted by The Wall Street Journal, stating that Markle was continuing to develop more content for the "Archewell Audio" audience on another platform. According to the journal, the royal couple failed to meet the productivity benchmark required by Spotify, resulting in them not receiving the full value of the contract.
The Spotify deal was one of several agreements the couple entered into following their decision to step down from their roles as working royals for the British royal family. They also have a $100 million deal with Netflix.
