Princess Diana had a strong dislike for the sport of Polo, a sentiment that resurfaced with the news of Prince Harry's upcoming Netflix series, which features the equestrian sport. Diana, the late Princess of Wales, found Polo to be rough and boring, considering it a pastime associated with high society. Royal author Sally Bedell Smith shared insights into Diana's feelings towards Polo in her newsletter.
"While the sport was a form of relaxation for Prince Charles, who saw it as an escape from his royal duties, Diana felt sidelined and grew resentful. She even believed she had to plan Prince William's birth around Charles's Polo matches," Bedell Smith revealed.
According to Bedell Smith, Diana once sarcastically remarked about her husband's priorities, saying, "Charles could get off his polo pony for me to give birth." Despite Diana's distaste for Polo, both Prince William and Prince Harry were introduced to the sport by their father. Even after Prince Charles had to quit due to back problems, both sons carried on the charitable tradition he had created and raised millions for their own causes.
Now, Prince Harry is turning his love for Polo into a Netflix TV series. Production began last summer, but a premiere date has yet to be announced. Bedell Smith believes the series could be enriched by showing how Harry's own family has been involved with Polo for more than a century.
Meanwhile, a recent photograph featuring the late Queen with her three heirs — Prince Charles, Prince William, and six-year-old Prince George — reportedly played a significant role in Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's decision to leave the royal family. According to author Andrew Morton, the couple felt the royal family was conspiring against them, and the release of the photograph only reinforced their views.
In his book "Meghan: A Hollywood Princess," Morton wrote that the royal couple suspected the entire institution was conspiring against them. This feeling was allegedly confirmed when a meeting between Harry and the Queen, intended to discuss his royal future, was postponed at the last minute.
Speaking to the Mirror's podcast, "Pod Save the King," Morton revealed that Harry and Meghan had started considering leaving the royal family far earlier than the public believed. Talks reportedly began just six months after their wedding. Despite being given significant roles within the royal family, such as Harry's appointment as Youth Ambassador, the couple felt sidelined and started to contemplate a different direction for their lives.
