Meghan Markle’s Efforts to Revive Her Image May Be Backfiring, Says Royal Expert
Meghan Markle’s recent attempts to repair her public image have reportedly missed the mark, according to royal experts.
The Duchess of Sussex has been urged to take a leaf from Taylor Swift’s book on handling public scrutiny, especially as her recent efforts to change her public perception have seemed “desperate” and largely unsuccessful.
From her California wildfire visit with Prince Harry to ongoing allegations about her treatment of staff, and the highly anticipated release of her Netflix series *With Love, Meghan*, Meghan's every move has been closely watched.
PR expert Tom South, who is the director of Organic & Web at Epos Now, suggested that Meghan might benefit from studying Swift’s approach to managing a polarizing public image. South described the release of Meghan’s new show as a “pivotal moment” for her, offering a chance to shift her public narrative, which, according to him, currently comes off as “desperate,” even if her intentions are good.
“Taylor Swift is the gold standard for turning public backlash into fuel for reinvention,” South said. He praised Swift for her ability to embrace vulnerability and transparency during tough times, which helped transform her image into one of relatability and resilience.
In contrast, South noted that Meghan’s approach often seems defensive, especially when she tries to control her narrative or responds aggressively to media criticism. “That’s bad PR,” he added.
South recommended that Meghan take a more authentic approach, suggesting she might consider giving candid interviews where she could openly address her struggles, clarify her motivations, and respond to controversies in a more constructive way.
“This approach is more human,” South explained. “It would help her take control of her narrative without being critical or combative.”
As to whether Meghan will take a page from Swift’s playbook, only time will tell. But according to experts, embracing authenticity over defensiveness could be the key to reshaping her public image.
