Melania Trump: I am disappointed by the riots at the Capitol building
Melania Trump said she was "disappointed and discouraged" by the rioting at the Capitol building last week by her husband's supporters.
However, Melania Trump also criticized those who she said had used the tragic events to spread "obscene gossip, unwarranted personal attacks and false and misleading accusations about me".
The remarks marked the US First Lady's first public comment in five days since a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol last Wednesday.
The invasion of Trump supporters disrupted the process of declaring Joe Biden to be the next US President to be sworn in on January 20.
"I am disappointed and discouraged by what happened last week," Melania Trump wrote in a post on the White House blog released Monday (11/1) before sunrise local time, as quoted by Channel News Asia.
Condemns violence
But, "I find it embarrassing that around this tragic event there are lewd gossip, unwarranted personal attacks, and false and misleading accusations about me, from people who want to be relevant and have an agenda," he said.
The First Lady did not say who she meant. Last week, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, a former friend of the first lady and assistant at the White House, wrote an editorial accusing Melania Trump of "being involved in destroying America".
Their friendship ended bitterly after Wolkoff, who had worked to organize celebrations for Trump's inauguration in 2017, said the first lady failed to defend him after questions arose about spending the inauguration funds, which are now the subject of federal and congressional investigations.
