In a message shared on social media, she described feeling “saddened” by the fatal incident, which occurred during a Fleet Air Arm training exercise. She extended her condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives, stating that she and Prince William are keeping them in their thoughts during this difficult time.
The accident happened near Sourton Down, close to Okehampton, shortly before 4am on Wednesday. The helicopter involved, a Royal Navy Merlin Mk4, was taking part in a routine training operation when it went down in a field.
The Princess of Wales issued her statement in her official capacity as Commodore-in-Chief of the Fleet Air Arm, a role she was appointed to in 2023 by King Charles III. She took over the position previously held by Prince Andrew and is responsible for staying informed about developments within naval aviation, as well as attending key ceremonial events.
Prince William is also expected to reach out personally to the families of the deceased in the coming days, according to reports.
Since her appointment, the Princess has taken an active interest in the Fleet Air Arm’s work, including visits to airfields and engagements with personnel. During one such visit in 2023, she was shown the Merlin Mk4 helicopter used by the Royal Marines for global operations, including disaster relief missions.
A Royal Navy spokesperson confirmed the deaths earlier in the day, stating that it was with “deep sadness” that three service members had died during the training exercise. They added that the families have been informed and have requested privacy before further details are released.
Authorities and military officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, while tributes and condolences have been shared across the armed forces community.
